The Role

The Senior Lab Technician supports the day-to-day operations of our laboratory. This role serves as a key team member, performing laboratory tests, maintaining equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety and procedural standards. The Senior Lab Technician provides all the required technical support to enable the lab to function effectively. The work plays an important role in the foundational stages of research and development (R&D) and in scientific analyses and investigation.  The Senior Lab Technician works under the guidance of the Lab Manager and may provide support and training to lab staff.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and complex laboratory tests independently with minimal supervision.
  • Assist in the maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
  • Analyze and interpret test results, record data accurately and maintain detailed logs.
  • Ensure that all lab work adheres to established protocols and guidelines, as well as safety, health, and regulatory standards.
  • Assist in the preparation of samples, reagents, and other materials required for testing.
  • Collaborate with team members to support various research or production initiatives.
  • Conduct quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results.
  • Maintain inventory of lab supplies and ensure proper storage of materials and samples.
  • Prepare reports and summaries for review by Lab Manager.
  • Assist in the development and refinement of lab protocols.
  • Record and report data from all analyses and tests in the prescribed time and form and maintain records in accordance with laboratory procedures.
  • Prepare samples.
  • Maintain and operate standard laboratory equipment, for example centrifuges, titrators, pipetting machines and pH meters.
  • Operate analytical instruments.
  • Keep up to date with technical developments, especially those which can save time and improve reliability.
  • Conduct searches on identified topics relevant to the research.
  • Make detailed observations; analyze data and interpret results.
  • Perform limited troubleshooting and calibration of instruments.
  • Log in all samples for routine, non-routine and other tests.
  • Use ICP-OES for elemental analysis.
  • Prepare blind test samples and record.
  • Review incomplete samples.
  • Assist with lab cleaning, sample disposal, monthly inventory check, safety duties etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Requirements

●        Bachelor's degree in a related scientific field, Chemical Technology program or equivalent, plus 2-4 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

●        Experience with ICP-OES, Thermo Gallery, GC/MSMS instrumentation is preferred.

●        Strong knowledge of WHMIS and MSDS.

●        Ability to use and troubleshoot analytical instrumentation with minimal supervision.

●        Knowledge of laboratory standards techniques, terminology, equipment, and materials.

●        Knowledge of principles and practices of chemical, biological and physical testing and analysis including the preparation of materials, equipment and samples.

●        Experience with data processing including creating reports and graphs.

●        Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.

●        Previous research experience is preferred.

●        Strong knowledge of health, safety and environmental standards.

●        Excellent MS Office skills.

●        Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

●        Demonstrate applicable ethics and due diligence.

●        Excellent attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy with the ability to manage time effectively.

●        High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability.

●        Ability to respond appropriately in pressure situations with a calm and steady demeanor.

The pay range for this position is $65,000 to $75,000. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at the top of the range for their role. Actual placement within range will be contingent upon a number of factors, including but not limited to the candidate’s qualifications, education, experience, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
